TurboJXL
A clean-room, pure-Rust JPEG XL codec engineered for SIMD-accelerated throughput. TurboJXL is an independent implementation of the ISO/IEC 18181 JPEG XL standard written from scratch in Rust, with SIMD inner loops on AVX2, AVX-512, NEON, and SVE2 designed from first principles. It produces and consumes codestreams that are bit-exact with the libjxl 0.11.x reference on every conformance corpus testcase, and it exposes the same C ABI — so anything that loads libjxl.so.0.11 / libjxl.0.11.dylib / jxl.dll today can load TurboJXL in its place and get the throughput gain with zero code changes.
- Multi-threaded decode wins: every MT cell wins cross-arch (16/16 on AVX2 + NEON) at 1024² and 2048² resolutions.
- Encode at lossless e=3 quality: turbojxl[HighEffort] beats cjxl[e=3] at 2048² pooled across the corpus (0.918× vs 0.920×) — bit-exact JPEG XL output, smaller files, faster encode wall.
- Bit-exact parity with libjxl 0.11.x on every release. The ISO 18181-3 conformance corpus runs in CI; every byte-diff is a regression.
- 8 platforms from a single release: Linux (x86_64 gnu/musl, aarch64), macOS (x86_64, aarch64), Windows (x86_64-msvc), WebAssembly (wasm32-unknown, wasm32-wasip1).
Free to decode, free to integrate
Decoding JPEG XL files — from any supported language binding — requires no license and no runtime check. Every consumer workflow runs unrestricted:
- Decoding 8-bit / 16-bit / 32-bit float modular + VarDCT codestreams.
- Reading container-wrapped (ISOBMFF) and naked codestream forms.
- Inspecting metadata (header, color encoding, ICC profile, frame count) without decoding the pixel payload.
- Integrating through GDAL, libvips, ImageMagick, Pillow, browser image-decoder pipelines (Chromium/Firefox path), rasterio, PDAL, Python / .NET / Java bindings — by loading TurboJXL in place of upstream
libjxl.
Encode — licensed
Producing JPEG XL codestreams requires a free license key from your customer portal account. That covers:
- Lossless modular encode (effort levels 1 and 3 supported in v0.2.0).
- 8-bit / 16-bit RGB + grayscale + RGBA channels.
- Cross-arch SIMD encoder (AVX2 + AVX-512 + NEON) with parallel multi-group emission.
- Drop-in
cjxl-style CLI via the bundledturbojxlbinary.
Access
Sign in to the customer portal to download binaries, generate a license, and read the full documentation:
- Download binaries — prebuilt static and shared libraries for every supported platform, plus the C header. Signed URLs, 15-minute expiry.
- Full documentation — install guides, quickstarts in Rust / C / GDAL, API reference, integration guides for every third-party path (GDAL, libvips, browser, rasterio, Python, .NET, Java), performance tuning, and the license-activation flow.
- License management — generate, view, and rotate license keys.
